Die Bergkelder is located in the mountain overlooking Stellenbosch Station and therefore fits in perfectly with a steam train trip to this historic town in the heart of the premier wine region of the Western Cape.
Die Bergkelder is well known for offering informative and interesting wine tours which are professionally conducted. The tours are offered to small groups (max 25 people) so that a personal approach can be maintained. Bigger groups can be arranged by prior booking. The tours last just over an hour.
The tour moves through the Maturation Cellar, housing 20 000 barrels, where the character of the wines is being slowly developed in 300lt oak casks. It then ambles next to the river and over a suspension bridge up to the unique "mountain cellar". Here a 5-wine tasting is offered in the characteristically lit alcoves.
A walk down a 500 000 bottle-flanked passage opens up into the carved barrel cellar, depicting the history and founding of winemaking at the Cape. The tour returns past the bottling plant which can bottle 10 000 bottles per hour.
The cost of this rewarding tour is a nominal R60.00 per person and can be booked with your trip.
